Housekeeping: New Blog Address

Apologies for the radio silence, between a terrible cold that resulted in the loss of my social life whilst at its peak and some housekeeping I've been doing on the blog I haven't had enough time to put together some posts.

In case anyone's RSS feed went a little nuts with every single post on this blog, please please forgive me. I decided a little while ago that I wanted the address for my blog to reflect the name. To that end, I've changed the URL for the blog to GirlmeetsWolf.blogspot.com so that everyone who's using the Google Friends Connect widget* doesn't have to re-friend me on the new blog address. In order not to lose everyone following through other means I've recreated the blog with the old Welsh-Pixie address so that all old links will remain working. In the future, should I ever actually start making vintage reproduction children's clothes the Welsh-Pixie address will be available to me should I want it. However, it will no longer be updated with posts being published on Girl meets Wolf so please update your RSS feeds and bookmarks if you'd still like to receive my sporadic ramblings about anything that appears to enter my head.

I've streamlined the look of the blog, some things - whilst pretty - just weren't working for me and were more irritating than helpful, so they have gone! I'm not going to be messing around with the template (hopefully) for a very long time! I am, however, going to go back and re-write my CSS tutorials after some conversations with Charly, so for the moment those are not available but will be popping back up.

And as I finished with the BBC (for the second time in a fortnight) on Thursday I have more time for sewing! I'm looking forward to finishing (well, in some cases starting and finishing) the projects on my to-do list and sharing them with you.

* Google announced recently it was planning on shelving Friend Connect, but I think (hopefully!) that didn't apply to the Blogger widget version.

How Do You Use Pinterest? { Notes }

I wanted to do a brief follow-up to my How Do You Use Pinterest post a couple of weeks back because I found how everyone uses it really interesting.

I'm very good at remembering things I've seen but find that the title of a page isn't going to stick in my memory, so a visual bookmarking system is perfect for me. I'm also slightly compulsive (I've mentioned this before) but I like to be able to return to something whenever I think about it to check something, review it or just see if there's anything else popping out at me that didn't before.

Because of this I find it very interesting that Rachelle deletes her pins once she's acted on them and feels she won't need them again (she cited pins for a cat door and cellphone as examples). I'm assuming this means she's essentially pinning a shopping list, is that right Rachelle? I haven't yet explored using pinterest in that way, mostly because by the time I have the cash to buy the thing I've pinned it'll no longer be available, but I can see the appeal. I'm just not sure I could delete the pins once I'm done with them!

Most of you seem to use it to bookmark and for inspiration. I still can't believe that Charly hasn't given in to peer pressure and that Popbabe's work ban it as social networking! I love that Kristin pins things that are just because she loves them and she populates her fantasy house with them. I'm also incredibly impressed with her restraint, I can't keep away from pinterest and yet Kristin only checks a couple of times a week! I've managed to get almost my entire office hooked and am working on the rest of the BBC.

Project: Dresser { Notes }

I thought I'd talk about the choices I made, the inspiration behind them and the tutorial I used that resulted in my favourite piece of furniture in my house (to date anyway).

The original plan for the alcoves on both sides of the dining room fireplace had been to put in shelves, because that's what normally goes in alcoves, right? I'm a big fan of different sized shelves, I like having books and curiosities displayed for all to see, possibly because it reminds me of those little magical book stores with all their nooks and crannies. I'd pinned some inspirational pictures as per normal:

That plan had been in place several months now, I'd even talked over building them myself with my Mum, and how we'd construct them. It stayed my plan right up until I visited some friends in the village who moved here around the same time as me and are also doing up their own house. They'd bought a lovely pine dresser from eBay for their dining room. I love dressers, I'd just not thought about getting one as it didn't fit in with my idea of what storage I was after. After seeing theirs I completely changed my mind!

As it turned out, I had pinned a couple of pictures of dressers to my house inspiration board. The second was my direct inspiration for the style and colour of my dresser.

I toyed with the idea of keeping the table top part natural wood to match my dining table but as it turned out it had been stained far darker and would have looked wrong.

I was very clear that this was going to be my sewing cupboard, everything crafty was going to be stored in the one place. I also loved the blues and greens that shabby chic seems to be predominantly painted in.

Picture #7 was a direct inspiration for the way that I wanted to shabby up the paint. I love the white and blue, and I did toy with painting the entire thing blue but I plan on painting the double doors to the lounge a light blue and felt that it would be too much to have another large piece of furniture the same or similar colour, and I do love white furniture. The corner the dresser's in doesn't catch an awful lot of sunlight, despite its placement right next to a huge window. The back faces north and between the mountains on either side and the house next door my little dresser's corner doesn't get very much sun, it made photographing it very difficult! Painting it white brings a little more much needed brightness to that corner of the room.

I'd found a couple of tutorials on painting, pinned to pinterest of course! I loved the idea of pulling a colour through under the white and this tutorial offered just that.

I didn't have any solid soap, so I borrowed the idea of a candle from this tutorial and it worked perfectly. I got a bit carried away and in a couple of places used the candle on the blue undercoat where I shouldn't have because I wanted blue and not wood, but live and learn!

The end result is some great flashes of blue, not really noticeable but visible when you look.

The ceramic striped handles were another eBay purchase and cost ... well, rather a lot actually, but are totally worth it! Aren't they great?

The only real issue I came across (other than tired arms from all the damned painting) was the very large gaps above the doors on the bottom cupboard that hadn't really been noticeable when the wood was dark. As you can see, the white paint made it very noticeable!

Luckily it was easily fixable and for less than £1! Usually, where drawers are built in to cupboards there are strips of wood running horizontally along the underside of the drawer to prevent just this sort of problem. In this case no such strip existed. In the picture below you can see the support for the drawer on the left, basically the drawer runner, but no wood under the drawer itself along the front as you'd expect.

So I nipped to my local B&Q and picked up a small piece of trim for around 79p, measured and cut it to almost the right size (I used a saw and didn't cut anything vital, yay left-handed me!). I then painted it, sanded the edges and got this:

Project: Dresser

Firstly I just wanted to say a massive thank you to Sarah, Suzy and Sølvi (ooh, I alliterated and didn't even realise it!) for stepping in with guest posts at incredibly short notice whilst I was away. I don't know about you but I loved every one of them. Thank you girls, I couldn't have asked for better posts!

So recently I took a road trip to pick up a dresser I'd bought with my friend, Scott, who came along as the muscle. The dresser was another one of my bargains off eBay, scored for £50. It wasn't until I'd painted it, re-attached the doors and added my new door knobs that I realised just why it was only fifty quid.

The dresser was advertised looking like this:

Blurry certainly didn't do it justice, neither did the over-crowded room it was stored in. Scottie and I heaved my new dresser over a bed and around a drum kit, past the piles of boxes and out to my Mum's RAV4 borrowed specially for the occasion (via Bridgend and a cup of tea with cake). Thankfully, it fit.

Driving very slowly, paranoid I was going to break the glass doors, I edged my way back home where Scott and I heaved it up the front steps, past the new-to-me eBayed front door (I don't think I've told you much about that yet) and past the dining room table to it's fireplace alcove. It was the perfect size.

Knowing my flash-in-the-pan attention span, I immediately took all the doors off, took down the top piece and began painting it. Two weeks later I finally finished painting it, I knew if I stopped it would just sit there half done forever but it was a mammoth effort in self-control just to get to the finish line. Here's the end result:

I discovered, when I put the doors back on, that everything was a little warped. Gaps around the bottom cupboard doors were hidden by the darkness of the wood, and highlighted once painted white. The glass doors also fit strangely and don't close properly. The holes for the handles have been drilled unevenly and the drawers are too thick for my new handles to fit through. It's a crude dresser, made from sub-standard pine that stank of cigarette smoke. And I love it ... well, apart from the smell.

I've shabbied up the paint work, exposing the blue undercoat I gave certain areas. I still need to finish dressing it, I have some mini-bunting planned and I'm going to paint the wooden box green, but overall I'm very very pleased with the result.

The glass cupboard holds all my patterns and my button jars, miscellaneous bits and pieces, and elastics. The drawers hold all my sewing paraphernalia that I don't want on display and the cupboards hold ... stuff. Deciding just what to put in it took a whole weekend, after three years of no storage in my dining room I was suddenly indecisive over just what I wanted to put away!

All in all, definitely worth the effort. Still, I hope it's a long time before I have to paint any furniture again!

Guest Post: My Favorite Sewing Tools!

Hi people! My name is Sølvi and I blog at delfinelise, and I am thrilled to help Tors out this week!

Nice to meet you!

My initial thought was to write something about dressing stylish for winter, but since that topic already´s so well documented by Sarah and Suzy, I decided to share with you some of my favorite sewing tools!

I am always interested in new ways of improving my sewing skills, and I am always on the lookout for new cool stuff that can make my sewing experience even better. How about you? Do you have any special tricks or gadgets that makes your sewing more enjoyable?

Well, here it is, my top list:

1. Measuring tools. The classic Sømometer is a typical Scandinavian gadget, and as you can see from the picture, all the most important measurements are printed on it. Invaluable! My measuring tape is pretty sweet too, as it has one side with inches and one with centimeters, and it is printed for lefties! I am left-handed, and it´s so cool to have a measuring tape where the numbers start at the right side, much easier!

2. The second thing I´ll share is my sketching tools. I have a fashionary, witch is a sketching book with body templates. I sketch my design ideas in it, so I don´t forget, and I can always go back and see what I have actually made, and what I haven´t . I always color my sketches using my Caran d´Ache pencils. I've had them for ages (I am talking 20+ years here...), and they are so perfect for coloring!

3. The next things that are invaluable to me are my sewing books. As I use A LOT of BurdaStyle Magazine patterns when I sew, having a good reference book nearby is crucial, as the Burda descriptions tends to be quite foggy. A good fitting book is important as well, so I know I don´t spend hours on a garment only to find that it doesn´t fit.

4. For prepping patterns and transfering them onto the fabric I love to use my Signet Color chalk. It´s got cartridges in different colors, and it works well on many different types of fabric. I love that it has the shape of a pen as well, as it makes it more pleasant to write with than some of the other tools on the market. Pictured is a hand held hole punch as well. It´s perfect for punching holes in the paper pattern so that I can makes accurate markings on the fabric.

5. Next up are my favorite cutting tools. I depend heavily on my rotary cutter and cutting mat, it makes fabric cutting much more accurate and fast. I love my metal ruler as well, it´s super long, and with a 90 degree angle it´s perfect for cutting straight lines.

6. The last thing I would like to share with you is my favorite way of storing pins while sewing. It´s a belt for the sewing machine! I don´t have a big sewing space, so I love how this keeps (most of) my pins, sewing machine needles and needles in place. I found the tutorial for this on Martha Stewart.

Guest Post: Autumn Fashion in 1954

Hello, I'm Suzy from Suzy Sewing. A few weeks ago Tors had a wonderful post about Winter Style and one of her considerations was that she is often too cold to wear the stylish and gorgeous outfits from where she gets inspiration. I totally understand her and in keeping with the spirit decided to share with you some scans of what was in fashion this time of the year back in 1954. I am seriously developing a hoarding/ collection issue with vintage magazines, so happy to share some gorgeous images with you. Hope you enjoy!

The tide was changing and some more box shaped fashions were starting to emerge.

Yet the well known shape of the 50s New Look is still strong. I absolutely love this day to evening look. And she's wearing flats! How comfortable is that.

Many of the designs focus on the use of woollens for dresses. Illustrations focus on textures and colours. Very autumn, don't you think?

And finally I will leave you with the below scan, entitled Flatter your Figure. I am a firm believer that if you dress for your figure and know how to accentuate good bits and disguise not so good bits, you will be able to pull off any era of fashion.

Stylish Debi from My Happy Sewing Place and The Sew Weekly looking chic and cozy in her handmade cape!

As a Canadian, and a dedicated wearer of skirts and dresses in all weather, I am completely empathetic to Tors' dilemma and detest the SWAT Team look. In my wardrobe, the advent of winter does not mean I put away my personal look and dress like a completely different person for the next 8 months. What Tors and many of us are looking for, is a wardrobe full of versatile and practical garments that meet the needs of the season, yet don't sacrifice style or make our bank accounts scream in agony.

Taking a peek at Tors' Pinterest shows a woman of excellent style and taste with a penchant for vintage and vintage-inspired clothing. In her Trousers & Shorts pinboard, you can see she loves high-waisted, classically styled trousers. With her slender figure, I think she would look absolutely fantastic in classic 1940's style side button trousers: warm and stylish!

Gorgeous, no? I have a pair of Heyday trousers and they are great. They take a lot of abuse (Play Doh, anyone?) and come out of the wash like new! I'm sure crafty Tors could easily whip herself up a pair from EvaDress 3322. I'm planning on making a pair in dark denim and another in charcoal corduroy.

Given that Chez Tors is on the side of a mountain facing a valley, freezing winds and the like are the norm. I sympathize. I live near the lake where the wonderful phenomenon of 'lake effect snow' and 'cold vs. warm fronts' are played out in Olympic proportions all season long. My solution? A long, fully lined winter coat that either zips or button from collar to calves. Paired with waterproof, lined, knee-length winter boots I am very toasty warm in my skirts and dresses. I found my full-length red wool coat for $10 last year in my local thrift store. Score!

Expert layering is also essential. By this, I mean layers that are warm but can easily be removed once indoors. There's nothing worse than being all kitted up for the cold outdoors only to swelter in your central-heating-set-to-equator-hot office. Layering - it's a lifesaver.

Wouldn't Tors look terrific in this dress? Layered with warm tights, boots, and a fuzzy cardigan (a vintage beaded one, methinks), she would be toasty battling the elements on her way to work, yet still comfortable in her tropically heated office. I can also see her looking fabulous in Colette Patterns' Peony.

When one lives in a cold climate, the fabric of choice for warm winter garments tends to be wool....unless you're allergic, like Tors and I. *humph* While many would suggest lining the garments as a solution, but sometimes those itchies still seem to find a way to sneak though and drive me nuts! Solution? Warm, comfortable, durable, and easy care fabrics like corduroy, twill, and heavy jersey (cotton, bamboo, etc). I also try to use warm fabrics in unusual ways such as a Jasmine blouse sewn from flannel. Cozy and chic!

Project: Kids Bear Costume

Back in September, Jessica of Running with Scissors posted a request on her blog for pattern testers. Having seen, and fallen in love with, her kids Wolf, Bear and Fox costumes (the exact patterns she was wanting tested) I jumped at the chance.

Unfortunately, a combination of poor timing and the lurgy meant I didn't finish making the costume on time, but I did successfully manage to sew the entire costume in a day (less actually, but I faff about a lot ... just in case you'd not noticed that!).

Not having children of my own I made this costume for my nephew but my sister has been completely unable to convince him to try it on! I sent it to them at the beginning of October and have finally given up hope of having photographic evidence provided of him wearing it. This means you get boring hanging-on-the-wall pictures and a silly picture of me modelling the hood.

I thought about modelling the tail too but I just couldn't get it to photograph well.

The pattern was delightfully simple to follow, despite my confusion around the gusset (which I ended up putting in from back to front on purpose but not reading instructions properly as is my way and so getting a little lost). I've never sewn a gusset before and it was a definite head-scratch moment trying to figure out the instructions which, once I had figured them out, made perfect sense if I'd just been paying attention.

I made the costume out of a fleece blanket, the result is perhaps a little thicker than needed resulting in thinner arms and legs, probably not helped by the fact I didn't press the seams very well. Although I'm not sure if I was supposed to add seam allowance (which I didn't) because (as per normal) I didn't read the instructions properly. I made the 4 year old size as my sister insists Noah is very tall for his age (I think she's delusional) and then had to laugh when she received it and thought it would be too long for him. I'm guessing we might never actually know.

How Do You Use Pinterest?

I've been spending lots of time on Pinterest recently. Yes. Again. I regularly review my pins on any given subject as I'm thinking about various projects. The completion of my dresser (pictures to follow once I actually experience enough daylight to photograph it in) has made me start to think about what other furniture I need in the dining room. Obviously, the first place I start is my Dining Room board on Pinterest. Okay, so actually the first place I start is by figuring out how much of the crap sitting on every available surface (and in some instances the floor) needs to be kept in the dining room as well as, y'know, kept. But right after that I head to Pinterest.

Once I've had a nosey through my board of choice I tend to have a rummage through my followers pins. If I have time after that I look through the 'everyone' section to make sure there's not something pretty that I've missed. And then I probably go back to my original board, solidify my ideas in my head and remind myself what I'm looking for. Then I head to eBay and spend lots of money I don't have.

But I have noticed a tendency, on occasion, to re-pin pictures I've already pinned, unsurprising when you consider I've managed to rack up a rather generous 1000 plus pins over 39 boards, despite my freaky memory for things I've seen (which is why I adore pinterest!). And it got me thinking, how do you use Pinterest? Is it just to collect pretty pictures? Is it to visually bookmark recipes or tutorials? Do you even have a Pinterest account (and if not, why the hell not, are you crazy?!). Just how often do you go back and look at the things you've pinned, if at all? What exactly do you use Pinterest for? Answers on a postcard!

Winter Style

I've found it harder than expected to retain an individual style since starting back at the BBC. Working in the 'real world' I was expected to wear the office uniform; suits, nice shoes, shirts and a tidy appearance. Television doesn't work like that. I've mentioned before; you can (and I have) turn up for work in your pyjamas. Hell, I've worn a beautiful emerald green cocktail dress from Shabby Apple and no one batted an eyelid.

Interestingly, people have noticed I have a soft spot for the fashions of the past. Usually based, strangely enough, on my choice of shoes. Mmmmm, shoes. I think I've made it clear how much I love shoes, but just in case here's a reminder. And another one. But my shoe choices are a whole other post.

I want to talk about winter wear because I'm trying to get it straight in my head just what it is that I'm after. As ever, Pinterest is one of my major sources of inspiration. Below are some of the pictures I've posted on my outerwear and style boards that are relevant to this topic. I don't think it's too much of a long shot to assume that I'd like things similar in style, fabric and/or colour for my own wardrobe.

Not practical in the slightest. And actually has the same problems as the other two pictures in a way. That being coverage. Whilst I clearly love the styles, there's just a huge issue that's sort of insurmountable.

I don't know how familiar you are with Wales and its weather. But it's rainy. And windy. And bloody cold. I live on the side of a mountain, facing a valley bowl, it gets quite chilly around the old extremities and then some. Now, don't get me wrong, we're not on the Canadian or Russian scale of cold here, but it does require slightly more clothing than a pair of wool shorts I'm allergic to.

It also brings me back to my profession. Luckily, most days I spend in the office where the central heating is set to Caribbean with no hope of a cool breeze. But then there are the days like the three in a row I had last week. They involved early starts, long car journeys, mountains, caves and coal mines (sometimes all in the same day). You try dressing stylishly whilst wearing SWAT boots and the warmest coat you have (and thermals, and woolly hat, and crazy hair). I defy anyone to wear make-up whilst standing at the back of the Brecon Beacons in pouring rain and driving wind in a jacket made for a twelve year old (read: slightly too short in the arms and with a hood that doesn't quite cover your large adult head). The below is probably closest to my outfit during those days. Just swap the shirt for several jumpers and the lovely jacket for a fleece and a waterproof coat.

Now, don't get me wrong. I like this outfit. I pinned it afterall. But it's just so practical. Whilst I realise I can't get away with wonderfully stylish outfits like those above (and most of the things I pin), partially because I get cold so easily and mostly because - whilst the television industry wouldn't bat an eyelid - I'm uncomfortable wearing those kinds of things (read: shorts) to work as a soon-to-be 36 year old professional. Which is why it's been so hard maintaining a unique style at work. Something that allows freedom of movement for those days when I'm asked to run all over the building collecting or delivering things. Or those 12 hour days in the studio (or, gods forbid, the car). Something that'll keep me warm and relatively dry perhaps. Something to ponder further I think.

A couple of days ago I posted my to-sew/ to-do list for Christmas decorations on the Crafty Christmas Club, a collective of crafters who come together each year to share tutorials and gift ideas. At no point on that list does it mention a blushing teddy and yet that's exactly what I ended up with last night. I love it so much I'm fighting with myself as I'd originally thought to gift it to my housemate for her baby-to-be-once-born, but now I find myself hoping she has a boy so I can keep it!

The pattern came from Sew Pretty Homestyle by Tone Finnanger and is, as ever, remarkably simple to make. I cannot recommend her books highly enough.

Spotlight: Colette Patterns

Clara of Clazzerati prompted this post with her comment on my Sorbetto Surprise. You see, Claz has apparently never heard of Colette Patterns (I know, right!) and was wondering where to look for patterns. For those out there who also don't know Colette Patterns, these are the patterns you've probably been looking for.

Colette Patterns was created by Sarai. She's produced a range of beautifully packaged, easy to follow patterns that allow the user to create gorgeous clothes. The Coletterie, the blog for the site, is stuffed full of tutorials, tips and tricks and lovely pictures. Commercial patterns can be purchased from the shop, however Sarai has also designed some free patterns that are available for download from The Coletterie.

Not content with just some amazing patterns, Sarai has written a book on sewing (complete with patterns) available for pre-order from Amazon in the UK and US and she's currently running a sew-a-long on The Coletterie. She took a few minutes out to answer some questions for me:

Who are you?

My name is Sarai Mitnick, and I'm the creator behind Colette Patterns, an independent sewing pattern company. I live in Portland, Oregon with my husband, who manages the customer service and operations for the company, and my two darling felines.

How would you describe Colette Patterns to someone who doesn't know it?

I'd describe it as a boutique sewing pattern company that specializes in feminine, timeless styles. Style-wise, they definitely have some classic vintage inspiration, but in a very wearable, modern direction. We're also known for having great instructions and lots of additional tutorials and fun stuff on our blog, The Coletterie.

What inspired you to do what you do?

I've been sewing since I was a teen, but I was always disappointed by the offerings from the big pattern companies. It wasn't even necessarily the design choices that were available, but I didn't understand why the instructions had to be so complicated and cheaply produced.

My background is in User Experience; in other words, designing products that are usable and pleasurable. I thought it would be great to create a sewing pattern that would be fun and inspiring to use rather than confusing.

Where do you get your inspiration?

It comes from everywhere, really. I've always loved vintage, and lately I've been especially into the styles of the 1960s. I love a really simple sort of glamour, beautiful without being overdone.

But I also pay attention to modern fashion, and I particularly love seeing what real women are wearing in their daily lives. I love seeing the character of real people shine through in their own personal style. The development of so many street style blogs has been awesome to watch, it's really inspiring.

Finally, I'd say I'm hugely inspired by color. That can come from anywhere: art, nature, fabric, anything. Color ideas really motivate me creatively.

How do you push through design/ sewing fatigue?

I don't really get design fatigue, I don't think. And I'm lucky enough to have my assistant designer, Caitlin. She helps me do a lot of the daily sewing and sample making and tutorial development for the blog.

A bigger problem for me is having too many ideas and not enough time to implement them all. This can feel really discouraging and overwhelming sometimes. Keeping my ideas and projects organized really helps with that. I have a list of projects that I want to work on and try to stick to it, so I don't get overwhelmed with potential project ideas.

What's the most useful sewing tip you've ever been given?

It's not just relevant to sewing, but the adage "go slow to go fast" really applies. Rushing through sewing projects just doesn't suit me at all. I've found so much more enjoyment from sewing since I stopped trying to make things as quickly as possible and skip over the "boring" parts, like making muslins.

What's your favourite thing you've ever made?

It has to be my wedding dress! I bought some imported Italian 4-ply silk in gold, and trimmed it in a pearl-beaded organza. It was such a luscious fabric to work with, and the dress felt just perfect for me. It's a real treat to work with high quality materials like that.

Project: Sorbetto { Surprise }

I thought I'd show you the latest muslin of something I've been working on for, oh, about a month now. I've joined the ranks of Sorbetto lovers, and quite rightly as it is just another example of brilliant pattern making from Colette Patterns. This is a Sorbetto with a twist, however. A Sorbetto Surprise if you will ...

Whilst I love vest tops during the summer, we're rapidly heading in to Autumn here in Wales and I was after something with sleeves. Easy enough, I thought, as Mena at Sew Weekly had posted a cap sleeve pattern. I wanted something that came in around the ¾ length mark, so I just continued on the side seam lines until I'd reached the 13" I'd decided on. The ruffle edge came about due to a picture I've had saved for around 5 years and I really just wanted to see what they looked like in real life.

The big headache has been the collar. It's still not right; despite multiple drafts it still has a small gap at the front that you can't really see the full extent of in the above pictures. My sewing of curves still leaves much to be desired, but I assure you, that is a peter pan collar. I'm tempted to continue fiddling, reduce the neckline of the main pattern pieces by a seam's width so as not to lose anything from the original line perhaps. Overall though, I really like it and am planning on making a version in red gingham, probably without the ruffle on the sleeve as I think that has a more summery and floaty feel than the current weather requires.

If people want it, and I can find a scanner, I'll make the collar piece available. Just be warned it's not perfect and could probably use some more fiddling by someone a little better at pattern drafting than me. Even Gertie's tutorial couldn't help me get it completely right. I should also admit that after four drafts I gave up on making the undercollar that tiny bit smaller as I could never get it to work when sewing it together, so it's a small one piece deal. Hopefully with a little more practice I can get the collar looking right!

Tenby 24/7

On Monday 12th September, at 7.30pm on BBC One Wales, a four part reality series documenting life in Tenby will air. Filming took place in early August for the series, named Tenby 24/7, and Creative Services (aka Promos) were asked to put together a trailer for the programme.

It occured to me, shortly after rejoining BBC Wales to work with Creative Services, that the one thing I have access to that a lot of other bloggers don't is the world of television. Not actually as glamorous as most people imagine but lots and lots of fun.

I happened to mention in the office that I'd never been to Tenby and was nicely surprised to be invited along for the shoot. This involved a drive up to Pembrokeshire on a Tuesday mid-morning, an overnight and then a drive back that afternoon. A nice, easy couple of days you might think. Ha!

Phil (my boss) having decided his premise for the trail would be 'the colours of Tenby', put together a colour wheel and a list of things he thought we should shoot. Jon, the cameraman, added a few extra. I just went along to carry things, build sandcastles (that never made it in to the finished promo damnit!) and negotiate.

If you follow me on Twitter (@torsgrantham) you'll have noticed I suddenly developped an overwhelming love for Tenby and the RNLI. For those not in the know, Tenby (according to the BBC website for the series) is one of Wales' busiest holiday resorts, where people work hard during the summer to feast or famine in the winter. It's a beautiful town, located in a national park situated on the west coast of Wales (the sticking out bit on the left of the UK for those not local). Tenby's town houses are painted gorgeous pastel colours and the beach is all sand, blue sky and blue sea. The RNLI very kindly let us film the launch of their boat from right beside the sea doors, granting us access not normally allowed to the general public and I have to say, it was awesome! A big thank you has to go out to the residents and visitors of Tenby who were so helpful and not at all camera shy.

I specifically took my camera with me and took some shots, as and when I was free and able, of the filming and general vicinity to show you all. This will, once again, be a picture heavy post because I couldn't choose which ones I liked most (although be grateful I managed to scale it down at all, there were over 50 photos in total!)

London Blogger Meet-Up

A couple of weeks ago, Suzy of Suzy Sewing Blog tweeted that she was going to London to do some fabric shopping and asked for company. Having been a while since my last London road trip I jumped at the chance, knowing I could get a return coach ticket from Cardiff for roughly £20. Further conversations and a blog post later and Lauren of Tea & Crumpets and Justine of Polkadot Pebble were joining us. I'd not come across Justine's blog prior to the meet up but unfortunately for my poor housemate Lauren and Suzy are two of my very favourite bloggers which made me very very excited and very very babble-tastic. For the entire three hours it took to get there (and the three hours return) I don't think I shut up.

We had a lovely map put together by Suzy with shops to visit. I like this approach, it appeals to my Production Co-ordinator side, almost like a call sheet. I had no idea there were so many fabric shops in one area, and we visited each and every one. My favourites were probably Liberty's for its architecture (see Suzy's blog for pictures of us) and the Cloth House. Both Lauren and I decided that if we ever owned a sewing/ crafting shop it would be done out much like the Cloth House. We also discussed a Speakeasy, costume designer careers, Alexander Skarsgard, Game of Thrones, Alexander Skarsgard, Russell Tovey (who we passed in the street), Lord of the Rings and a whole heap of other subjects.

I had a great time chatting about everything under the sun, pointing out the craziest fabrics that could be made in to Doctor Who costumes and wandering around sunny (sunny!) Llundain. Definitely the best road trip in a long time and I hope to do it again soon.

I've finally recovered from the epic day trip and have found the time (whilst at work) to mess about with my photos. I failed miserably to take many interesting pictures, including pictures of any of us, but what I did take is below for your perusal.

The Pumping Station

Sorry everyone, another picture intensive post (as are all the posts planned this week). I'm desperately trying to get to grips with my camera and am still rather rubbish as I can't quite figure it out. I'm sure I'll run out of things to photograph soon, just bear with me.

I was at a bit of a loose end one weekend and decided to go for a wander around the Pumping Station in Cardiff, a beautiful Victorian pumping station once owned by Welsh Waters and now a treasure trove in a Grade II Listed building. Everything is for sale, and it has everything you can think of: antiques, vintage, even modern day ... erm, stuff. My parents, once they learned where I was headed, decided to tag along to hunt for a birthday present for one of their friends. The Pumping Station is so big, so packed with goodies, that we only covered the ground floor before lunch. So we headed to the nearby Harvester in Cardiff Bay for yummy goodness and then returned to the Pumping Station to scour the upstairs floor. Be warned people, you could lose days there.

I wore my Ginger skirt that I'd made (and completely failed to blog about, shame on me). I love my Ginger skirt, unfortunately my step-dad can't seem to work my camera either and the photos he took of me were mostly too blurry to post. Suffice to say, the skirt looks awesome, fit together really well and completely deserves its own blog post (note to self, write that!).

Not only did we manage to fit in the Pumping Station, but we also decided - as the weather was being particularly lovely - to go for an ice cream and a wander along the Victorian Pier in Penarth as my parents had never been. The art deco pavillion on the pier is beautiful but in need of restoration, Penarth Arts & Crafts Ltd are asking for local volunteers to help with their planned renovations. The pavillion managed to survive a fire in 1931 that destroyed much of the pier, the Port Royal Park (a 7,000 ton ship) being blown by gale force winds in to the pier in 1947 and the Bristol Queen paddle steamer running in to the pier during dense fog in 1966. Poor thing, it's had a bit of a bad time of it, and it's one of the last remaining Victorian Piers in Wales. It's not particularly long but it has great views and, on this occasion, a local brass band playing. Any day that involves ice cream is a good day, but this one was particularly lovely.

I've mentioned before I'm using pinterest as inspiration for the different rooms in my house. One of the many pins I love is this one, the vintage scales are great and add a piece of colour and interest to the wall shelves.

So I set out to scour eBay for my own and found these! The label needs replacing, luckily for me I have a friend with a printing business, but in the meantime my shelves look much prettier and they go with my mixer and my Aga. The kitchen is still very much a work in progress but I love all the little steps like these that take you closer to the finished product.

The Big Cheese 2011

Every year my local town, Caerphilly, holds a free festival called The Big Cheese on the last weekend of July. So named - I presume - because once upon a time it was an actual cheese festival to showcase Caerphilly Cheese. Nowadays it's the site of a huge fun fair and market with organic food, homemade gifts and exotic animal showcases (the birds of prey are fabulous). There's living history and battle re-enactments in the castle, not to mention the mead and ale tent. Oh, and the hog roast. There's an awful lot of pig eaten at this event.

Every year I take the wolf for a wander through the crowds ... a very slow wander as we're often stopped every couple of feet by people asking about him. This year I took my camera and below are some of the things I snapped whilst out and about. Warning, a little picture intensive (I got a bit over-happy to be posting a non-css post).

New Blog Design { Again }

Yes, those eagled eyed among you will have noticed I've changed the layout of my blog. Again. I'm obsessed, I know.

There have been a lot of things I've been unhappy with recently, my job and my blog layout were the top of the list so I've changed both. I'm back at the BBC from Monday and voila! a new layout. There's still some bugs to iron out which I'll be quietly working on but if you find something displaying wrong or weirdly please let me know in the comments or via the contact page above.

Whilst talking to LandGirl1980 on twitter about templates and new layouts I showed her the before and after. This template was originally the Zinmag Tribune template I found over at btemplates.com.

I loved the layout (mostly) but didn't want those colours, prefering the colours I'd decided on for the previous layout. I'd also seen a template called Grid Focus who's menu bar I really liked. So I added that part to this, changed all the colours, spent about two weeks swearing and finally created this. I don't know about you but I love it! LandGirl seemed to love it too and appeared to be a bit crestfallen because she didn't know how to tailor templates. So I've promised her (and you) tutorials because literally all I've done is change colours, add/ remove sections and create incredibly basic graphics. Easy peasy! So long as you've got the patience to go through each line of code and, if necessary, make a change, check it, undo the change and repeat. I'm not going to lie, it's time consuming and frustrating at times but when you get the finished product you'd been seeing in your head it's totally worth it.

There are, however, some things I can't get to work. My lovely post headers have lost my special font and disqus doesn't present properly and so I've returned to bloggers comments. This has meant I've lost everyone's comments since disqus was switched on until now. Boo!

You'll probably notice other changes. The name of the blog is now Girl meets Wolf. This was done to reflect my life as it currently stands. Welsh Pixie was something I came up with when I wanted to make childrens clothes, I still want to try my hand at that but until I do Welsh Pixie isn't something that reflects who I am at the moment. Plus, the wolf is constantly photo bombing me so it seemed only fair!

Moving forward I want to focus on my quest for a style, my sewing (when I'm being productive), my job where it's relevant and my progress with the house. I'm also planning on selling off my wardrobe to fund buying clothes I actually like/ fit and will be posting anything here that I feel might be of interest first.

Oh yes, I'm baaaaaaaack with a vengeance!

Style It Light: For a Lazy Summer

Style It Light are running a Wear It Your Way challenge that I thought I'd have a go at. I've been playing with layering concepts and love the idea of a long dress under a simple skirt to allow the dress to create a nice band of fabric at the bottom of the skirt, almost like an apron skirt effect. I'm in love with florals right now so this dress was a must have and offered a lovely blue that could be picked up with accessories. Add some wedges, shades and a great hat for a casual girly look.

Project: Personalised Picture

Remy (my 2nd Cousin) & Noah, both aged 3 (or thereabouts)

It was my nephew, Noah's, 3rd birthday on 30th April. At the time I began planning what to make for his birthday he still lived in Colorado but that didn't put me off beginning the reindeer hobby horse from my favourite crafting book Sew Pretty Christmas Homestyle by Tone Finanger. Then, a couple of months ago, my sister and her husband announced they were planning to return to the UK to live. Shortly after, Liz and Noah arrived, with Michael (her husband) following once his spousal visa was approved. Not only did this mean that my nephew is now on the same land mass and closer and easier to visit, it meant I'd actually get to know him in person.

Unfortunately, upon meeting him for the first time since his first birthday, I realised that all he's interested in is Thomas the Tank Engine and cars (or caaaars as he currently says it, the only word he says in American). The hobby horse idea, whilst still going ahead, would need a bit of rethinking perhaps.

And then, the weekend before his birthday, I fell ill and was unable to make it over to see them when they visited my parents. The hobby reindeer languishes on my desk beside me, its stick against the wall ready to be attached. I never got to give it to him. Fortunately, this meant I got to make something else! Something a little more postal service friendly.

I needed something quick and easy to make, inspired by this picture on Pinterest I made a quick trip to Ikea via Asda and put together the perfect gift. Something small, tailored to Noah, easy to make and postable.

What do you think? I'm really pleased with it, despite the first print coming out green (which should tell you everything you need to know about the state of my printer). And because he's three and every child should have something they can actually play with on their birthday, I got him a Hot Wheels rumble car ... thingy ... toy. It makes noises. And talks. Just what every kid named Noah dreams of for their birthday, more caaaaars.

Summer Portrait

I should probably start by reiterating that the idea of a weekly picture to track my life, looks (and by this I mean style, hair length, wrinkles, etc) and location was taken from Cassie who's excellent blog you should all go visit. The prompt to record the mundane pieces of my life that stick out when looking back on a week is the real life I actually live, as opposed to the interesting bits I'd normally blog about, and is a great way for me to look back on this period of my life.

This week's photo was taken before the rain started (again) in my back garden after a mammoth brushing of Bear. In fact, on the left of the photo is a chunk of his fur that looks almost like a white bowl. What you can't see is the rest of his fur all over the garden and up the side of the house behind us. You could have knitted a jumper with what I got off him and there's still far more to go!

Ffefrynau Friday { 06.06.11 }

I'm baaaaaack! Not that I've actually been anywhere but, wow, I can't believe how long it's been! I take a little time off to spend with family and then all of a sudden it's been over a month! There's been a lot of stuff happening here but nothing particularly blog worthy and I got to the point where I felt I literally had nothing to blog about. I didn't think people wanted to read about my epic reading stints (not books, work stuff) so decided to keep schtum but perhaps I took that concept and ran a little too far with it.

Familial visits were great, aided in part by the early Summer. And over the long Bank Holidays I found my focus shifted towards the house and away from sewing and the blog. The longer I left it the harder it felt to get back in to the swing of things. So I'm introducing some changes around here based on things I've seen on other blogs that I've liked, that will offer me structured posting topics and a more regular prompt to post.

First, I have to introduce you to Philippe who, with a little plop, appeared from under a book shelf. Puck has been outdoing himself over the last few days and all sorts of dead birds have been appearing in my living room. He has a bell but unfortunately he also appears to have an endless supply of patience and an uncanny ability to hide in plain sight. There's a slim possibility Phillippe is the same frog I had to rescue from the utility room several times last year and, on one never to be forgotten day, from the washing machine after a full wash cycle and spin (yes, remarkably, he survived that).

An excellent Photoshop tutorial from Cassie (whom I've also stolen Sunday's post ideas from so you should really check out the rest of her blog because it's awesome) can be found here.

I'm a little late to this party but I recently discovered Sienna and Savannah Millers' clothing label Twenty8Twelve and really liked it.

Sunni is running the Ginger Sew-a-long, Colette Patterns' newest offering. It's a great pattern and excellent for beginners. Sunni writes easy to follow and comprehensive tutorials and always does her best to answer every question asked, I highly recommend joining in if you're after a fab A-Line skirt, details here. Sarai of Colette Patterns is offering a discount on the pattern, the code is available from Sunni's blog but expires on May 16th.

Dreamy Whites posted a picture of a French fruit crate that I'm sure could be crafted using bits of a pallet and some chicken wire. I need to try my hand at building stuff so I might end up giving this a go.

Talking of crafting, this tutorial at Redberry Barn for a great lamp made out of a jar and an old shade is just perfect and going on to my to-do list.

I haven't just been working on bits and pieces around the house for the last mumblemumble, I've also been completely addicted to Pinterest. If you haven't heard of Pinterest, where have you been? St Fagans Family Outing

St Fagans (aka The Museum of Welsh Life) lies on the outskirts of Cardiff. I've known of it's existence for years, Doctor Who filmed there for the two-parter Human Nature and Family of Blood back in Series 3 but I'd never visited so I eagerly agreed to a family outing to the (free) museum with my Mum, my sister and my nephew. It was slightly surreal to walk around the village and recognise it all, knowing full well I'd never been there, but otherwise it was a lovely day out and I highly recommend a visit if you're ever in the area with some time to kill.

Spring Is In The Air!

I mentioned on twitter this morning that due to the fact it looks like my bedroom has been binge drinking and then vomited my clothes all over the floor I've had to be very brave in my choice of clothing today as I didn't have time to iron/ determine what was actually clean. By brave I mean, not overly for the normal person. By normal person I mean not me.

I've not had a chance to play with my new camera (thank you Dad!) because of the terrible weather we've had recently but I rushed home today in the hopes of catching the light and giving it another shot. Two minutes after getting back in the house I decided it might be prudent to take a shot with my phone. Y'know, just in case.

Good thing I did, the above picture was the phone version. Despite figuring out how to activate the self-timer I've neglected to figure out how to focus and zoom (out) on shots I'm not currently in when there's just a wall in picture. Ah well, something to work on!

You're probably thinking 'what's so brave about that?'. The shorts, dears, the shorts. I've had these for about a year and never had the courage to wear them. I was surprised by how comfortable I felt in them once everyone in the office had noticed them and absolutely no one asked what the hell I was wearing. I may have to wear them again.

In other (sad) news, Nelson the Red Admiral butterfly I mentioned from an earlier post has passed away last week, just days before the first day of Spring. I've no idea how he survived through the winter months, particularly as he was living in my bathroom.

I also wanted to thank everyone who left comments on my muslin post, I shall be reviewing those when I get a second. That second doesn't appear to be any time soon unfortunately as I have a rather action packed month ahead with an imminent visit to Saundersfoot on Saturday for the St David's Festival and a fortnight long visit from my sister and nephew starting the following week.

My first blogiversary passed me by last month with nary a twinge, mostly because I've been a bit rundown with a cold that had no other symptoms than enormous lethargy and inability to focus. Should I be doing something to celebrate?

I also wanted to ask if people would like recipes for homemade beauty products? I make my own lip balm and have been planning on branching out but have been dithering over the question of how much DIY is too much? What do people think? Yay or nay?

Project: Style 3894 { Muslin }

My muslin for Style 3894 has come along. Not, I fear, in a good way. Whilst it appears to fit Miriam perfectly, when I try it on myself I feel the fit leaves much to be desired.

Gosh, excuse the falling-to-pieces bathroom!

I'm not sure if it's just the fabric I've chosen for the muslin which is heavier and of a thicker weave than the chiffon I've picked to make the final shirt, or if it's me but it looks blockier on me than on Miriam and I'm just not happy with it.

The princess seams on the back are too big and blouse outwards over the base of my shoulder blades. Is this even fixable? Am I asking to get myself into a lot of trouble trying to fix that? I tried to take a picture but between trying to keep Puck and Bear away from Nelson* and a new camera I don't really know how to use they didn't come out. Or actually work, because apparently I don't know how to use the self-timer on this thing.

I'm half pleased with the redrafted collar. The original pattern envelope looks like this:

It wasn't too hard to change the curve of view 2 into something a little more to my taste. I'm not sure it's right though, is it too big to be a peter pan collar?

I'll leave you with some closer shots of the muslin, because I was feeling artsy and - let's face it - I need all the practice I can get with my camera!

* Nelson, in case you don't follow me on twitter, is a Red Admiral butterfly that's living in my bathroom. Yes, living. I know! I'm shocked too. I named him Nelson after the only Admiral I could think of who, in my head, wore a red coat (despite the fact I doubt he actually did).

What To Wear To ... A Sci-Fi Convention

This weekend gone I drove 5 hours to Pontins in Camber Sands, East Sussex for the SFX Weekender. Actually I drove 5 hours to Camber Sands to hang out with two old friends, one of whom I've not seen in a decade, the sci-fi bit was just an added bonus.

I tried, I really did, but gale force winds and no proper heating in the chalets or the main building meant that my jeans and my huge woolly cardigan was just not going to be removed for the three days I spent freezing my butt off down there. Photos of the weekend are limited and I'm going to share with you just two.

If you follow me on twitter (shameless plug: @torsgrantham) you'll know the guy in the middle, holding on to me rather tightly, freaked me out one evening when I was alone in my chalet by breathing outside the door. In his defence, he was just walking past.

I'm wearing my red checked shirt as support for the Welsh rugby team who unfortunately didn't manage to win their match against England on Friday, my Mum's flared jeans that I've stolen because I love them and a scarf and cardi I refused to remove the entire weekend. The guys are wearing their standard work clothes.

What I should have done is something a little more along the lines of this:

As soon as I saw her I was in envy. I didn't catch her name but she had great style and really stood out from the crowd (which, given the crowd was made up of stormtroopers, people on stilts, superheroes and general sci-fi fans, was quite an achievement). She was a little shocked at being asked to be photographed for my blog but happily gave her permission. Lovely lady, should you, by some miracle, be reading this, thank you!

eBay Queen

Yes, I feel it's time I confess; I am a total eBay whore. I love it. I buy all my shoes, clothes, technology (oh, lovely Blackberry, I can't wait for you to arrive!), and even my smalls on occasion, from eBay. I decided that if I waited until I finished sewing something I'd be going naked to work by Tuesday.

Zoe of So Zo' recently wrote a series of posts about consumerism and society today that I highly recommend. I've never been comfortable with the disposable mindset most products today are created with and much prefer to shop second hand. If an item already exists and is in a good condition I don't see the point in shopping for something brand spanking new. And since a good friend introduced me to eBay I appear to have taken that concept and run with it. This is a Good Thing as the charity shops and second hand stores in South Wales appear to be sadly lacking in anything that pre-dates 1980. Of course, my poor Postie doesn't feel the same way but so long as he keeps delivering my parcels I shall continue to be happy.

Just to give you an idea of how much I've bought on eBay in the last ... hhmmm, let's go with the last month because I've been rather prolific this January, here's a lovely recap in pictures. In fact, I've just noticed this will be my 100th post so why don't we make this a little competition in celebration of the fact that I appear to have enough to tell the world that I can write 100 posts and apparently not bore people.

Dydd Santes Dwynwen Hapus!

Today is the Welsh equivalent of St Valentines Day, dedicated to Dwynwen (pronounced Doyn-win ... kinda), a woman who lived in the 5th Century and was reputed to be the most beautiful of Celtic King Brychan Brycheiniog's 25 daughters.

There are several different versions of the story, mainly due to the Bards preference for oral tradition, but they all agree that Dwynwen fell in love with a prince named Maelon Dafodrill. Some versions say her Father refused to consent to her marriage to Maelon because he had pledged her to another. Some say that when Maelon found out she was pledged to another he rejected her and/ or raped her. They all agree that the two lovers were parted and that Dwynwen begged God to make her forget him.

The stories say that she was visited by an Angel who granted her wish, but who also turned Maelon in to a block ice. Dwynwen was given three wishes and she asked that Maelon be thawed, that she never marry and that God meet the hopes and dreams of true lovers. As a mark of her thanks she gave her life to God and founded a Convent at Llanddwyn.The well located there was named after Dwynwen after her death and is believed to have prophetic fish (or eels) who can tell you if your relationship will be a happy one. It is still a place of pilgrimage to this day and it has become tradition to exchange Lovespoons with one's partner as a symbol of love.

Oh, and if you thought 25 daughters was a lot, Brychan was rumoured to have 11 sons as well. In fact, some stories place his number of children at around 50 (it's a wonder he got around to any Kinging)!

Sod The Heidi

I'm sorry, I thought I was smiling when I took this

I've been wearing my hair styled after one of Gertie's tutorials, so much so that I've actually taken to calling it a Gertie rather than Heidi. It's quick, easy and keeps it out of the way all day. Better yet, it doesn't result in a mass of hair at the back of my head that then catches on my car seat or my office chair. I do love a win, win situation. Unfortunately, as this photo attests (taken at oh dark thirty this morning) even immediately after it's been braided my hair still manages to never look tidy. I'm not entirely certain if that's due to my nervousness in using hair products or the general waviness of my hair or both. I rather like it regardless, so thank you Gertie!

And I'm wearing my new (to me) favourite pair of wool trousers. My mum gave me two black bin bags full of her clothes and these trousers were amongst them. Other (standing) photos aren't quite so flattering but I'm telling myself that's because I'm taking pictures on my phone instead of with a camera (that I don't own) and not because they don't actually not suit me. They're a grey coloured wool with a thin black stripe, very comfortable, and completely not the style I usually wear. They go rather well with my t-bar Hush Puppies and have rather quickly become a staple in my wardrobe. Huzzah for free clothes!

Inspiration: Pastels & Photographs

Wow, we're barely in to 2011 and my attempts to post twice a week have already failed miserably. Thankfully, as I blog for pleasure and not money I have also decided not to beat myself up over this and just go with the flow, strike when inspiration, erm ... strikes and when TV boyfriends have better things to do than distract me with their siren calls.

When I first started pouring over magazines for decorating ideas for my house one of the many images I keep ripping out to keep were of rooms decorated in candy cane pastels. I love the colours, soft enough to be an impression rather than in your face. I love the timelessness of those colours and the hint of age they offer, perfect for a 19th century house. I keep forgetting those images in the face of so many other wonderful pictures portraying other things, right up until you get smacked in the face with them again and suddenly you're back on track.

Lola's Room on Etsy was that swift, open palmed smack that I can see now I was long overdue. And better yet, it's a British shop, the first I've managed to find on Etsy and a complete coincidence. I was searching for pictures of daffodils and wellington boots for a guest post I'm attempting to put together elsewhere on the interweb* and came across a blog that used photos from other sources to tell the story of their daily activities. As I scrolled down the page this photo caught my eye.

Style Isn't Just Fashion

Not only is there a personal ongoing quest for a fashion style happening, but my 100 year old plus house is also in need of renovation and I'm constantly on the look out for inspiration. I bought the house because I was heartily sick of magnolia painted walls in rented accommodation (and I wasn't allowed a wolf). Upon moving here just over two years ago, I have slowly begun work on the house starting with a new kitchen, and promptly painted the room neutral. This is obviously because I am a Moron.

Now, don't get me wrong, I like it but it's a very neutral room. In an attempt to liven up the kitchen with some additional colour and because I love the colour red, not to mention because I'm too poor to be able to afford tiles and too incompetent a grouter to tile myself, I hit up on a cheap plan to create a splash back. Wallpaper. And not that vinyl kitchen/ bathroom stuff that comes in only one or two decent prints and costs a fortune. Normal, everyday wallpaper. I know, genius, right?

I carefully picked out my wallpaper, ordered it and it arrived several months ago. Unfortunately, despite a number of people offering to help me put it up no one has actually followed through and the roll has been languishing on my window sill ever since. A broken finger, an attempted burglary, Christmas, a magic wand remote control and New Year have added extra distractions but, oh yes, yesterday was the day.

I carefully (okay, haphazardly) rolled out the wallpaper along each wall and marked a couple of inches more than I needed before returning to the dining room table to cut. Once all the pieces were cut I started clearing the work surfaces, removing lower shelves and taping along the edges of the surfaces to help protect the wood from the glue. I then covered my table with disposable tablecloths and got to glueing.

It transpires that I am as poor a wallpaperer as I am a grouter and choosing to wallpaper (by myself) for the first time since I was about 15 in an area fraught with plugs and screw holes was probably not the best plan. But so long as you don't look too carefully at the finished results then it's unnoticeable.

The original idea had been to mix up some PVA glue with water and waterproof the paper to ensure it would work as it was intended, as a splashback. And whilst I think the theory was sound I'm not sure the print I've chosen really works. It's possibly a little too busy. And old lady-ish. In fact, I'm beginning to think maybe I should have saved for some tiles instead, my grouting can only get better afterall. Thoughts, anyone?

Did I get everyone's names right? Did I miss anyone? Honourable mentions also go out to Gertie, Solannah, Casey and Marianne who, if I remember correctly, all used to have fringes and who are included in my count because ... well, because it's my blog and I say so ;) That's almost 50% of my blogroll, if I reduced my criteria to just brunette I'd have a much higher percentage. But, still, it does beg the question, what came first, the haircut or the blog?

I don't know about you, but I choose blogs to follow because they're inspirational and make me feel better about my own choices. It stands to reason, when I think about it with more than my usual absenteeism, that the majority of the blogs I follow regarding fashion choice will be written by women who resemble my choices or the choices I want to make. I suppose even amongst vintage and fashion bloggers (or is it just me again?) there's a need to find others like yourself to help bolster your confidence?

I've had a fringe off and on for the last 15 years or so. I say off and on because I have a love/hate relationship with hairdressers so when I find one, regardless of how far away it is, I tend to stick with them. Usually that means a haircut twice a year, including fringe trims. As you can imagine that doesn't bode well for the fringe and it's usually only a matter of weeks before I'm pinning it back.

Fortunately, I've potentially found a hairdresser in Caerphilly who very nicely trimmed my fringe for me a couple of days ago and, as they're very easy to get to and trim fringes for free, I should hopefully be able to keep this one going for longer than three weeks. Win!

I'm not a fan of jewellery, I don't like the way it clunks or restricts (I know, I promise I am a girl really). I have long, thin fingers and a tiny wrist, most rings and bracelets look too big and clumsy on me, even if I could get past the noise. But this, this is pretty and decorative and is fabric, what more could a girl want?

I should mention I'm not getting paid to post about these things, and this will hopefully become a more regular occurrence on the blog (the inspiration posts not the getting paid or the not getting paid as the case may be) as I have reams of links saved that I don't really refer back to often enough. Hopefully this will remind me!

Welcome 2011

Firstly, Happy New Year! Blwyddyn Newydd Dda! And huge apologies to Andrea and Evelyn as the below was supposed to automatically post itself some time ago. I'm so sorry girls, I am obviously incompetent. Thank you both ever so much for my goodies, I love them! I would have posted a picture of me modelling the fab apron that matches my kitchen floor but until I get the wire out of my hand I can't shower, wash my hair or put on make-up properly and, quite naturally I feel, there will be no picture of me until I can. It's a fantastic haul and I'm very grateful to you both for sending it to me.

I know many bloggers are doing/ have done round up posts for 2010 but I've not been blogging a year and I don't feel I've really contributed much that's worth remembering at the moment, beyond silly poses for finished shirts and a truly wonderful shoe collection. Personally, that's more than enough for me but I hope to work a little harder this year with regards to this blog and my sewing. However, I'm dreadful at finishing things so I won't be making that a resolution, that's just asking for trouble! Instead I'll just wish everyone a bright, prosperous and fun New Year. And leave you with a traditional toast to all the beautiful ladies for 2011. For the men who are fortunate enough to have us, the losers who had us and lost us and the very lucky bastards who will still meet us! May this be a fantastic year!

It's All About Me

I hope everyone had a great Christmas. My parents were snowed in, and have been since about the 17th, so couldn't make it here for lunch. Instead I joined friends for their large, loud and very fun Christmas day, I think it was my best Christmas in a long time!

The lovely Lauren of Tea and Crumpets nominated me for the below meme, as if you haven't learnt enough about me already this month! ;) It feels a little narcissistic to write this for myself but Lauren asked so I guess it's okay, right?

1. Why did you create the blog?

I’ve been writing an online diary of sorts for years. I began shortly before leaving London for Wales and the BBC as a way to remember the ups and downs of the television productions I was working on at the time and that journal ran until I finished with the BBC in 2009. Faced with unemployment and a decidedly un-telly focus I started a new journal that was just supposed to be about writing but was actually just about stuff. It didn’t take long for that one to fizzle out! As my first blog post here says, I’d had a vintage day which had sparked an interest in vintage bloggers which sparked an interest in maybe doing something about my image which I’d always hated. Ten months later I’m still really enjoying myself (despite my sporadic posting) and I’m finding it interesting how, not even a year later, I’m wearing things I’d never have had the courage or interest in wearing when I started this blog. It’s nice to be able to look back and be able to track the changes in myself which was ultimately my goal.

2. What kind of blogs do you follow?

All sorts! I follow a lot of vintage and lifestyle blogs, some sewers, quite a few crafters and every single one of them are brave, individual people who are an inspiration to me. I regularly peruse blog rolls of those I follow in the hope of finding new blogs and am happily up to just over 100 blogs in my reader and counting.

3. Favourite makeup brand?

I’ve never been a brands person, I’ll buy whichever product I tried that worked for me the best within my budget. Saying that, I have been heavily influenced by make-up artists I know and have ended up with foundation, concealer, mascara and lipstick by MAC and I love it. However, I also have Body Shop and Rimmel lipsticks because they’re pretty so I’m not precious about sticking with one make.

4. Favourite clothing brand?

I think I can quite honestly say I don’t own any branded clothing as society understands it. I used to buy quite extensively from La Redoute but I don’t think that counts? Saying that, if I could afford it I would buy pretty much everything under the Nadinoo label.

5. Your indispensable makeup product?

Moisturiser, I have very dry skin. I’m blessed with a fairly even complexion and dark lashes and brows which has meant I never really felt like I needed to cake my face in make-up (which is how it always felt). That opinion has revised, I want to wear make-up well, on a daily basis, but I’m yet to learn how to apply it subtly, lastingly and to my satisfaction. Until that time arrives I’ll have to go with the moisturiser or my tweazers, I hate having straggly eyebrows!

6. Your favourite colour?

I couldn’t blame a person for looking at me and assuming blue. I actually love red but own very little in that colour, or indeed any colour other than blue or brown. I’m working on it though!

7. Your perfume?

Everyday, vanilla from Body Shop, it’s my favourite smell and I wear it all the time. For nights out I go with that old favourite Chanel No 5.

8. Your favourite film?

Oh dear. I have to pick just one? I adore The Princess Bride, I have fond memories of the original Star Wars trilogy and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Pride and Prejudice is my sewing film. Penelope is my girly pick-me-up film. Amelie is my geek-chic film. But my current favourite (note the current) is The Sorcerer's Apprentice with Nicholas Cage (a flirtation, not a boyfriend despite what my DVD collection might tell you). I love the realism of the magic, I adore the humour and I totally love the entire film, it all works brilliantly and leaves me humming Sorcerer’s Apprentice for days after watching. Despite what I said in my last post, there's always a place for Disney!

9. What country would you like to visit and why?

When I was in school I wanted to spend a year in France, a year in Germany, a year in Italy and a year in Spain so I could learn the languages better (I studied French, German and Italian at school and was scarred for life by a family visit to North Spain that resulted in some knowledge of the language). I never got around to doing that but there’s a part of me that would still like to. I also want to visit Canada, Eastern Europe, India … who am I kidding? I want to go everywhere! I’m endlessly curious and I love to learn about people and places and can’t think of anywhere I wouldn’t want to go. I’m hoping in the near future, though, just to explore my own country better as I found that no one really knows their own doorstep so well as someone that’s travelled from the other side of the world. I’d like to be the exception to that rule.

10. To be chosen by blogger.

What breed is your dog and why did you choose him?

Ah, Bear. The dog that won’t sit still to let you photograph him but won’t let you have your own photo taken without him in it. The Crazy Wolf as he’s known in my village and with reason.

Bear is a Northern Inuit or Utonagan (I’m not sure which and they’re very close breeds). They’re not currently recognised breeds although I believe a petition has been made to the Kennel Club. Utonagan is Chinook for spirit of the wolf and they are basically Husky, Malamute and German Shepherd crosses, bred to look like the grey wolf but with the temperament of a German Shepherd. They love being around people, are excellent with cats and smaller dogs but on the downside become destructive when left alone for long periods of time. Bear has, to date, destroyed 2 sofas, 2 phones, 3 DVDs, 3 roomfuls of carpet, 4 pairs of shoes, 3 plant pots, 2 duvets, several jackets and cardigans (he loves chewing off buttons), 2 pairs of gloves and a dog bed … or two.

He is also very excitable and has an awful lot of energy, when uninjured we walk twice a day for roughly an hour at a time and he could go for more. However, at 2 and a half he’s still classed as a puppy and won’t fully mature until he’s 4 so I try not to hold it against him. As to why I chose him, he was pretty and ever since Due South I’ve wanted my own wolf. Besides, what better dog to have as a burglar deterrent (tried and tested a couple of weeks ago)!

Wardrobe Woes

Apologies for my absence. If you follow me on Twitter (@TorsGrantham) you will have heard me ~~whinge~~ expound at great length behind the reasons. You can't tell reading this, but this post took me several days to write. Okay, so that's a bit of an over-exaggeration but I'm ~~stabbing~~ at the keyboard typing right-handed due to an accident involving the wolf, two cats, the lead and my dominant hand that resulted in a spiral fracture in one finger. I'm beginning to think the wolf doesn't like me anymore, particularly as he also ate my last bag of peanut butter M&M's and you can't even buy them in this country.

Consequently, I'm going out of my gourd (fair warning) as I'd planned a lovely weekend of sewing and now can't. I tried. I really did. You've no idea how hard it is to pin a pattern to fabric with the wrong hand. Or how hard it is to pin a pattern to fabric with the right hand (or left in my case) that has two fingers taped together and are rigid. Unless you've done the same thing, of course.

What did I try? Well, it wasn't Simplicity 1683 despite gaining the missing pieces. It wasn't the cut but nowhere near stitched Butterick 2198. No, that would be too easy, finishing something I'd already started. No, I had to start an entirely new project: Style 3894. With a re-drafted collar. Blame Ali, she's the one that suggested 1970's as a potential source of flattering patterns. I even decided, given my limitations and the constant sizing issues with everything I make, that starting with a muslin might be the way to go. I didn't get very far, I admit, but at least it does look like it might fit. Hopefully. I'd say fingers crossed but really that makes me want to cry right now.

What the accident has also meant is that I finally had the ~~inclination~~ opportunity to clean out my wardrobe and focus on a direction with my sewing plans. I have to admit it's been helped in part by Sarah and Ali, their recent posts have been exactly what I was trying to figure out without knowing exactly what I was trying to figure out. I can't tell if the exercise has made more of a mess in my room as I attempted tidying with one hand, it was in a fair old state before I even did myself any damage, but it has helped clarify some things for me.

Namely, I want two interchangeable wardrobes broken down into seasonal pieces; work and play with spring/summer and autumn/winter pieces. My current workplace requires business casual clothing and I've been getting away with a lot more casual than I would like purely because they know I can't afford new clothes. Ideally I'd like some more formal pieces suitable as business-wear that can be dressed down and added to my casual wardrobe if needed.

Perhaps controversially I've decided to stick with colours that match my favourite shoes (read: all of them). This seemed sensible as I'm anal about matching my shoes to my outfit in some way. I still have so much to learn. I haven't gotten down to the nitty gritty yet and with a full week ahead involving Harry Potter, gourmet burgers, a sleep-over at my Mum's and a small operation on my little broken bones I don't think I'll be getting around to it until at least the weekend. I can't wait though, it's certainly going to be an interesting exercise.

Now, if you'll excuse me I'm off to watch Kirstie's Homemade Home whilst attempting to stuff a handmade teddy with one hand. Wish me luck!

Project Saver!

Today a rather innocuous envelope appeared on my doormat, courtesy of the lovely Anne of Vintage Fabric Market. If you don't know the site I highly recommend it, she has some great fabrics for sale, vintage patterns, hats, costume jewellery and a range of accessories. And she's got a sale on too!

Whilst browsing her site I came across Simplicity 1683, which you might remember stalled after I discovered I was missing the collar piece. On a whim, I emailed Anne to see if she might be able to help me with my missing piece (s - when I checked fully I was missing three pieces in total). Well, look what arrived this morning!

Yes, that's right, I can finish my dress! The collar, the cuff and the long sleeve pieces are now carefully stuffed in the envelope with my original pattern pieces. It'll have to wait a little longer until my crafting orders are over and done with, but it's now not a wadder for sure (which is always nice!).

CiN Craft Fayre

Work held a Craft Fayre on Friday to raise money for Children in Need. Despite never having sold any of my stuff, mostly because it's made from other people's templates, I decided to sign up as all proceeds went to charity. Unfortunately, because I've never sold any of my stuff I had no stock and only managed to produce a paltry 3 Easy Teddies (we nicknamed them Neopolitan), 1 and a half Day Bags and 2 lavender stuffed hearts.

Pathetic, right?

I'd been trying to keep my hopes up when everyone passed me by for the extensive jewellery selection on offer, particularly as I was very proud of my finished green bag (isn't the Ikea fabric fab?!)

It took me 3 hours to sew the 24 poppers to make the bag removable for ease of washing. 3 hours. Which is why only one bag got finished in time. Everyone thought the teddies were very cute but nobody seemed to want to buy them.

So imagine my surprise when, at the end of the day, I discovered I'd sold 2 green Day Bags, the half made Day Bag (to be finished this weekend), 4 Easy Teddies and 1 lavender heart. Not only that but I have orders for 2 vanilla strawberries, 1 lavender heart on ribbon, 1 vanilla heart on ribbon and requests for samples of my make-up bags, hobby horse, angel wings and hot water bottle cover. A win overall I think!

The Mists of Llanbradach

Yesterday was Guy Fawkes Night, an evening to celebrate the failure of the Gun Powder Plot to kill James I and replace him with someone more in line with the plotters religious views. Over the years the true meaning behind the evening seems to have been, not quite forgotten but maybe not quite as remembered as it once was.

The larger towns usually host a fireworks display, Caerphilly (my nearest town) is hosting a display tonight at the castle (if you watched Merlin last week you would have seen it throughout the episode pretending to be two different places) and I think I'll take a meander down to watch as they're usually very very good.

The smaller villages, like the one I live in, tend to have private bonfire parties that, if they're anything like the ones I attended as a child, involve hot dogs and jacket potatoes and more cartwheels and sparklers than big exploding fireworks. If you're lucky there's even a bonfire and if you're really lucky you were allowed to make a Guy to throw on the fire.

Those of you here in the UK, do you find that the morning after Guy Fawkes Night dawns misty and smelling of smoke? It certainly does here! Below is the Old Tip and the Old Pit as the mist rolled further in at around 8am this morning. I'm endlessly fascinated by how the landscape here interacts with the weather, the clouds constantly brush the trees and it creates a beautifully isolated looking environment at times that I just can't get enough of! I predict more photos along the similar lines throughout winter.

I'll leave you with a section of a documentary broadcast in 2007 (I think), narrated by Richard Hammond, that recreated the Gun Powder Plot and explored Guy Fawkes' role in the conspiracy. Only this time they actually blew the building up (one they built specifically obviously, not the actual House of Lords). The results are astonishing and I highly recommend the entire documentary.

Tutorial: Easy Teddy

This is the easiest teddy I've ever made. I should perhaps mention I've only ever made two types of teddy, but this was definitely the easiest. You don't even need a sewing machine - as long as you can sew a running stitch you can make this teddy.

YOU WILL NEED:

Some fabric, twice the size of the teddy you intend to make
A length of ribbon
Needle and cotton
Pencil
Card and an existing teddy to use as a template (or just freestyle one)
Toy stuffing
Fabric paints/ pens

1. Put something on the telly to entertain you whilst sewing. Pride & Prejudice is my film of choice because, despite loving it, I have no TV boyfriends in it to distract me

2. Ensure your workspace doesn't look like mine

3. Create your template. You can either draw around a teddy you already own, in which case make sure it's a flat, unarticulated teddy like the one pictured below ...

... or create your own template. I'm using one from Sew Pretty Christmas Homestyle by Tone Finnanger. I highly recommend her books, they're filled with fabulous projects.

When creating your template remember not to draw in ears, ideally they should be a seperate template to ensure they stand up correctly but, honestly, anything goes. As long as you can sew it you'll be fine.

You'll notice on my template I've marked where to leave a hole for each ear and a hole to allow me to reverse and then stuff the teddy. You'll need to mark these on your template too. The ear holes will, naturally, be the same width as the ear and the side hole just needs to be big enough to allow you to turn the finished teddy in the right way and also allow you to get your fingers inside to position the stuffing.

4. Fold your fabric in half and place your template in the middle. The entire template will need to be sewn around, no using the fold in any way (sorry!). Draw around your template and remember to draw around your ear template twice.

Comme ca!

5. I've found that when sewing together the bottom piece of fabric tends to move about so pin your two pieces together just to be on the safe side.

6. Running stitch your way around each template using the line you drew as your guideline. A very handy tip I picked up from Tone Finnanger, sew on the line! (sorry about the over exposure here)

7. Once it's all stitched (apart from your gaps!) cut out your template with a seam allowance added. Don't forget to clip the curves. I tend to veer into a fatter seam allowance around the area for the side hole as that will need to be invisibly stitched closed and I've discovered it's easier with more fabric. The choice is yours though.

8. Turn the ears the right way in and insert into the hole you left on the head upside down (trust me). Once you've positioned them to your satisfaction sew the hole closed. In the picture below the left ear is in place and the right ear demonstrates how the ear should be positioned. You just need to insert it between the fabric inside the hole, not lay it on the top like the right ear.

9. Turn your teddy in the right way ...

10. ... and stuff! (my favourite part!)

11. Slip stitch your side hole closed. Youtube has some excellent tutorials on this stitch if you're not familiar with it but essentially you're still doing a running stitch but each complete stitch is on opposite sides of the fabric. Remember to stitch on the folded-in fabric so you can't see the cotton and when it comes to knotting the fabric poke the knot in so it's hidden.

12. Grab your ribbon and tie, tightly, around the neck to define the head.

13. Draw on your face, add any other painted features you please, iron to ensure they're wash proof (or follow the instructions of your paints if they differ) and you're done!

It was a lovely crisp afternoon here in the Cwm Rhymney so I decided that, rather than trudging around the Old Tip as usual, I would take the wolf up the Pit Road and across the mountain ridge below the farm for a wander. Molly linked me to the below literal music video in the comments of my previous post whilst we were ~~gushing over~~ discussing Morten Harkett of A-Ha. I laughed so hard the wolf jumped on me to make sure I was okay, so please note this is apparently not pet safe ;)

Oh dear. Quietandsmalladventures posted her top five crushes growing up. Here's mine (and possibly where I began my fling with TV boyfriends). Your turn! Go!

1. Christian Slater (in everything he ever did*)

2. Morten Harket (that voice, that smile, those eyes .. mmmmmmmm)

3. Kyle Maclachlan (in everything he ever did* ... except some bits of Twin Peaks that I'm sure he was fab in but I never watched because I'm a wuss)

4. Richard Dean Anderson as MacGyver (and, well Stargate now ... I'm still growing, right, does that count?)

5. Han Solo (interestingly, not so much Harrison Ford)

And an honorable mention to Jeff Richards who played second eldest brother, Benjamin, in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I adore that film and him.
